Knee problem may cause a “bump” but isn’t serious

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright October 11, 1989

Dr. Horowitz:

What exactly is Osgood’s disease? My son was just told he had this condition but I really don’t know anything about it. The doctor just said it was normal and we shouldn’t worry. Continue Reading

Vacations are supposed to be fun, but are often stressful

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright October 09, 1989

Dear Readers:

I wrote this column the night before departing on a recent vacation. One whole week away from the office. I will be flying south with my family, driving around a desert, and attending a wedding that I definitely would not have had time to attend if it was taking place in Timmins, instead of Los Angeles. I tend to find time for weddings in Los Angeles. Continue Reading

Now that summer I s almost over (aww, says the kids, yeahhh, says the mothers!) I reflect back over the past couple of months to see what has been a common injury this summer. And this summer’s hands-down winner is…”turf toe”. Continue Reading

Will inverted traction machine relieve back pain?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright August 23, 1989

Dear Dr. Horowitz:

I seem to remember you writing an article about some sort of device which you are supposed to hang upside down from if you have back pain. My back has been killing me for years, and I have tried everything from injections from my doctor to treatments from a chiropractor. Nothing gave me more than a few minutes of relief. My back is very sore again, so I got to thinking about this machine. Do you really think it might help a case like mine? Continue Reading

It’s time to clear some of the mail off my desk

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright August 16, 1989

Dear Readers:

Today’s column will be one of those dedicated to clearing the mail from my desk. Actually, I let my mail accumulate on a shelf, on top of some books, near my desk, but “newspaper types” and lawyers are always talking about things sitting right in front of them on their desks. Yes, elastic bands can fly off your hand accidently

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright August 09, 1989

*In response to Mayor Bill Bell hitting a council member with an elastic band, intentionally?? Unintentionally??

Dear Dr. Horowitz:

Is it possible for an elastic band to suddenly, without warning, fly off one’s finger and be projected through space?

There seems to be recent news reports about this phenomenon and I was just wondering if you had any information about this.

I am worried that this will become an epidemic which will spread to our schools, offices and maybe even the council chambers.

What is your opinion?

Can eating apples trigger migraine headaches?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright August 02, 1989

Dear Dr. Horowitz:

I have been a migraine headache sufferer for many years and I have visited many of the world’s best specialists, including a special clinic I went to when I was in Germany. All of the doctors I see tell me I have migraine headaches, and they recommend medication to prevent the headache from turning into a full-blown attack, or medication to dull the pain once it is there. Simple exercises may have prevented “frozen shoulder”

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright July 26, 1989

Dear Dr. Horowitz:

I developed a frozen shoulder last year, and just now I am starting to get over this. I hurt my arm throwing a Frisbee at a company picnic, but because it was a rather mild pain, I didn’t think too much of it. The pain went away, but then came back two weeks later. Continue Reading

Only professionals should “twist” your spine

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright July 19, 1989

Dear Readers:

Once in a while I receive a question from a patient which I think would make an interesting topic of discussion in my weekly column for The Liberal.

Last week a patient told me she was at the cottage with some friends on the weekend when someone in the group developed back and neck pain. This person’s father was also present. The father then proceeded to push and pull and stretch and twist his daughter’s spine until she obtained the relief which she’d obviously felt from this ritual so many times before.
