Will Sleeping on Your Back Cause Neck Pain?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright August 20, 1986

Question: I hope you can settle an argument my husband and I have been having. He says the best way to sleep is on your back. I remember years ago a doctor telling me that the best way to sleep was on your side, but any way was fine as long as it didn’t result in neck pain or headaches. What is your opinion? We are both in our 50s and we both get mild neck stiffness on rare occasion. Continue Reading

What are the Benefits of Calcium Supplements?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright June 11, 1986

Question: Yesterday I went to my family doctor for a cold I’ve had for a while. He casually mentioned that I should be taking calcium supplements every day. I am a 25-year-old female, active, healthy, and there is no history of osteoporosis in my family. He told me that I should still be taking approximately 500 mg per day. You’ve written about calcium supplementation many times in your column, but because I never thought it applied to me, I never paid much attention to those columns. I thought that calcium supplements were only for older women, or those who have osteoporosis in their families. Please give me your opinion on this matter. Thank you. Continue Reading

QUESTION: I am out of shape! I am just starting to get back into an exercise routine and I am now going three times a week. My problem is that I feel like I am dying. I feel tired and weak and just totally lousy. I know in the long run I will feel the benefit and will feel fantastic, but how long will it take before I won’t feel like I am collapsing? Shouldn’t Chiropractor Treat His Own Sister?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright July 16, 1986

Dear Dr. Horowitz:

I am the sister of a chiropractor. I have been told by my friends and some of his patients that he is a terrific chiropractor. Of course, I wouldn’t know. He has never treated me and he has been practicing for over six years. I have had back aches, headaches, and various other things that I have asked his advice about, but never has he done anything for me. He always tells me to phone another chiropractor and book an appointment because he feels that he couldn’t give his best and be objective when treating his own family. Continue Reading

Should Older Women Take Calcium Supplements?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright July 9, 1986

Question: I enjoy reading your columns and find them very informative. Do you feel that a woman should take calcium supplements after she has stopped menstruating for two years? Two doctors in the same clinic disagree. One says yes, and the other says it is not necessary. Please comment. Continue Reading

Scoliosis Was Detected During the Stone Age

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright September 17, 1986

Question: My teenage son was recently diagnosed as having scoliosis. Could you please describe the results usually obtained with physiotherapy and chiropractic treatment? Also, could you please tell me if this problem has just recently been identified? After checking through older ‘doctor books’ I see no mention of it at all. In the newer ‘doctor books’ it is always described. Could you also tell me if one parent usually also has scoliosis? Continue Reading

My Mailbag has Fan Mail and Complaints Too

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright August 6, 1986

For those of you faithful who have been reading my columns for the past few years you will know that once in a while I don’t have the time, energy, or proper mental attitude to write a column. This is one of those days. I have a stack of letters (is nine considered a stack?) in front of me and this week’s column will consist of a few of those. Continue Reading

How Safe is Kung Fu?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright November 26, 1986

Question: My son is currently enrolled in a kung fu class given at his university. Last week he came home with a ‘severely bruised spleen’. He is confined to bed, and he isn’t able to go back to school for another week. Continue Reading

Are Bruised Ribs Treated the Same as Broken Ribs?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright September 3, 1986

Question: I bruised or broke a couple of ribs three weeks ago playing football. I say bruised or broke because I never had x-rays taken, and my doctor told me that it didn’t really matter if they were broken because he wouldn’t do anything different anyway. He says that bruised ribs are treated the same as broken ribs. Continue Reading
