With All These Tests, I Should Host a TV Program

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright October 29, 1986

Well, here we go again. It’s time to test another product. I’ve been asked to test and comment on futons, waterbeds, rowing machines, rebounders and now lumbar traction units. I’m beginning to feel my name is David Horowitz and I should have my own syndicated television show. Continue Reading

Why Does Spinal Manipulation Work?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright October 22, 1986

In last week’s column I was responding to a question which was asked by a retired physician who wondered what I meant when I constantly referred to a ‘manipulation of a joint’. Last week I described what the manipulation was and today I will describe why it is done and what effects are achieved. Continue Reading

Why does my middle chest bone stick out?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright 1985-1991

Question: I am a 21-year old male. The middle bone at the bottom of my chest sticks out. I can push it in to where it would be normal, a good two inches. When I do this, it and the entire middle section move in. It has been this way for as many years as I can remember. I am too self conscious to see a doctor about it in person. I need to know: a) if anything can be done about it; and b) what caused it. Continue Reading

What causes muscle twitches?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright 1985-1991

Dear Dr. Horowitz:

What causes muscles to twitch uncontrollably when relaxed? Often, when I’m trying to sleep, a muscle in the back or front of my thigh twitches, sometimes for 20 minutes or so. Continue Reading

Traction Therapy is Worth a Try

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright November 12, 1986

My past few columns have dealt with a form of spinal therapy known as ‘inversion, or traction therapy.’ There are a few inversion units now on the market and I am currently testing one known as the Bac-Trac. This unit allows the user to hang upside down in a comfortable, relaxed position, thereby allowing the joints, muscles, ligaments and discs in the lower back to be relieved of their normal stresses of gravity. Continue Reading

Retired MD Asks for an Explanation of Spinal Manipulation

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright October 17, 1986

Question: I have read several of your articles in the past few months and although I have found them interesting I am afraid I must make a request. Several times in the past you mentioned spinal ‘manipulation’ as a type of therapy which is used in some cases of back pain. Perhaps I missed it somewhere, but I don’t think you ever really described what this ‘manipulation’ really is. Continue Reading

Just ‘Hanging Around’ Proved to Be Relaxing

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill LiberalNovember 5, 1986

In last week’s column I described a bit about a new gadget (the ‘Bac-Trac’). I am testing for its Canadian distributor. It is a light-weight, portable, metal-framed unit which is designed to have the user hang upside down from his or her thighs. That’s right- upside down, as in head close to the floor. Continue Reading

If High-Heeled Shoes Cause Pain Don’t Wear Them

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright November 19, 1986

Question: I have a job as a temporary secretary for the government. I usually work three to four days a week, depending on how busy my agency is. I always wear high-heeled shoes when I work. I know they are not supposed to be good for you but I like the way they look, and so up until now I have put up with the occasional bit of foot soreness. Continue Reading

How can scoliosis be treated?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright 1985-1991

Question: My doctor just diagnosed me as having scoliosis. He said that at this time it is not considered a serious problem and I should see him again in six months. My friend is being treated by a chiropractor for scoliosis. What can chiropractors do to cure or help this problem? Continue Reading

Heel pain is a common problem for gymnasts

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright 1985-1991

Question: My 11-year-old daughter is a competitive gymnast. She trains about three hours a day, four to five days a week. Just recently she developed pain in the back of her heel, especially when she is vaulting or doing her floor routine. Her coach told her to rest and apply ice, which she did. This relieved the pain but, after returning to training, the pain came back. What do you think it could be and what should we do about it? Continue Reading
