Letters shed light on puzzling “disease”

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright July 04, 1990

Dear Readers:

Late last year I wrote a series of articles about an illness known as fibrositis, which is a very puzzling “disease” which causes muscular pain and fatigue, among other things.

Unfortunately, there was some mix-up between the staff at The Liberal and my own staff member responsible for picking up my mail from them (my wife) and as a result three letters were forgotten until just recently. Continue Reading

Can thinking positively help fight illness?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright June 27, 1990

Last week I discussed some of the theories which abound these days regarding the so-called mind-body connection. It is thought by many that there is a strong connection between the thought processes of the brain and organic functioning of the body itself. Continue Reading

Growing body of evidence supports self-healing

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright June 20, 1990

A few months ago there was a
column in the Toronto Star by
Henry Gordon which was
discussing ‘self cures.’ Ten days
later in the same paper, there
was another column by Frank
Jones on a friend of his who was
listening to classical music in an
effort to “treat his untreatable
cancer.” The next week I
received a letter from a lady
who writes:

Maternity ward doctors and nurses are underpaid

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright June 13, 1990

Another column about the
wonderful birth recently of my
new son. (I am writing this
column on May 9).

A chiropractor watches people
move and bend and walk. We
are trained to assess motions in
the spine and we pick up subtle
things by observing people
move. (Sometimes it gets me
into trouble on the beach.)

Busy dad catches up on Cher’s life at hospital

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright June 06, 1990

It is now the morning after
the night before. The night
before was spent at York
Central Hospital’s obstetrics
department. My wife was
having our third child.

What was supposed to be a
simple, quick, no-problem birth
turned into a 14-hour affair. Everything went very well, just
slow.

He suffers from a sore back when camping out

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright May 31, 1990

Dear Dr. Horowitz:

Now that we can say that camping season is here, I would like
your opinion on something. We usually camp weekends at the
provincial campgrounds, or at the various private facilities. We have
a large tent for my wife and myself, and a smaller pup tent for our
two young boys who like to sleep in their own space.

Use headrests properly and you’ll save a lot of pain

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright May 23, 1990

Dear Dr. Horowitz:

I recently read an article in
the Toronto Star about how
important headrests are in the
prevention of whiplash injuries.

A chiropractor was quoted as
saying that 80 to 90 per cent of
whiplash injuries would not
have been as severe if the
headrest was adjusted properly.

He said the headrest should
be no more than one or two
inches away from the back of
the head.

How to calculate your ideal exercise heart rate

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright May 16, 1990

Dear Dr. Horowitz:

I want to begin to improve my heart function by getting
back into some sort of decent shape. I used to run in college
and I was even on the cross-country team. But training
methods are different now.

In those days, we went out
and ran and ran and ran until
we were in good shape. Now I
hear so much about getting
your heart rate into the “target
zone” for training purposes. I
am 50 years old and although I
have never had any health
problems, I don’t want to
overstress my heart. What
kind of heart rate should I be
aiming for while training?

What Can I Do for My Back Pain?

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, The Liberal, Copyright 1987-1991

Question: I am 25 years old and have had back pain for almost as long as I can remember. I had visited my doctor on at least three occasions and he pronounced me fit each time. I even went to get a chiropractor’s opinion but he also could not offer me an explanation for my pain. Last week I hurt my back playing hockey and was taken to the hospital for X-rays. They told me I had a condition known as spondylolisthesis and it is possible that this condition has been responsible for my back pain over the years. Why would no one have found this earlier and what can I do for it? Continue Reading

There is a lighter side

Dr. Allan Horowitz, published newspaper article, Richmond Hill Liberal, Copyright May 02, 1990

A post-script to last weeks
column:

In last week’s column I
discussed what it is like to get
older. Not from experience, but
rather from word of mouth.

Why do certain things have
to happen to us as we age?
There must be a reason. But
until I know how we got “here”
and where we are going
afterwards, I won’t comment. Continue Reading
